The fifth session of the new cycle of Elisava Masters’ Talks is given by Lev Manovich, the most cited author in the world in the fields of digital culture, digital art and new media and one of the three most cited in media theory and digital humanities. He was included in the list of “25 people shaping the future of design” and in the list of “50 most interesting people building the future”. He is currently Presidential Professor at The Graduate Centre, City University of New York, and director of the Cultural Analytics Lab.
Are we really experiencing a great revolution in visual culture? Is it true that “anyone” can create “unique” images using this technology? Manovich will critically evaluate some of the claims about AI image synthesis and suggest alternative ways of understanding it. The talk is based on the last chapter of the book ‘Artificial Aesthetics: A Critical Guide to AI, Design and Media’ (Manovich and Arielli, 2021-, online publication).
Over the past three decades, Manovich has published 180 articles and 15 books including ‘Cultural Analytics, Instagram and Contemporary Image’, and ‘The Language of New Media’, described as “the most suggestive and far-reaching media history since Marshall McLuhan”. Manovich’s digital art projects have been shown in 112 international exhibitions at Centre Pompidou, ICA London, ZKM, KIASMA and other prominent venues.
Elisava Masters’ Talks
The second edition of this cycle of conferences takes place between November 2022 and May 2023 with presentations by top international creatives. The proposal aims to address the current state of design with a program of six talks in which professional experiences on design, communication, architecture, art and innovation will be shared.
The guests of this second edition head the lists and trends in contemporary design, engineering and creativity worldwide, disciplines in which Elisava has been a reference in its educational offer for more than 60 years.
