The Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya, through the Centre Obert d’Arquitectura, is organizing a commemorative event for Lluís Casals on December 10th at 7:00 p.m., in memory of his passing on February 16, 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented a gathering and recognition of those close to him.
His widow Mercè Castro, his son Jaume Casals, his siblings, as well as colleagues and friends such as architect and urban planner Fermín García Morales, photographer Pep Rigol, and Guim Costa Calsamiglia, Dean of the COAC, will join us.
Lluís Casals
He was one of the most relevant Spanish architectural photographers of the last third of the 20th century, a key reference in the field of photography between the 1970s and 2000. He mainly documented the architecture of Spain during the Transition period, offering new perspectives on public spaces, facilities, and infrastructure.
The COAC Historical Archive has been preserving his archive since April 2023. Considered one of the most important collections of contemporary architectural photography, as Casals dedicated most of his career to photographing it. He was the photographer who captured the most architecture from the 1970s and worked for renowned architects such as Rafael Moneo, Carlos Ferrater, Studio Per, Oriol Bohigas, Bach-Mora, Clotet-Tusquets, and Jordi Garcés. His unique perspective contributed to the international success of Spanish architecture at the time. In fact, some of the iconic images of the architecture from that period are his, such as those of the Museum of Mérida or the Mills of the Júcar in Murcia. One of his particularities was that he photographed buildings without people.
Some of his works can also be viewed on the website [arquitecturacatalana.cat](https://www.arquitecturacatalana.cat/ca/obres?keyword=Llu%C3%ADs+Casals).
