It is a collection of 150 illustrations created by 28 active professional women dedicated to documenting specimens for scientific, artistic, and educational purposes. These illustrations were selected through two open calls shared via social media. The first, titled Green Open Gallery, took place at the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid in 2024 and featured over 600 illustrations by female artists from 22 countries. In this second call, the focus has been on promoting local creation and inviting Catalan illustrators, whether native or adopted.
The passion and professionalism expressed in the works on display make this space a tribute to the women currently engaged in botanical illustration. Botànica Oberta demonstrates that their sensitivity, richness of expression, and skill in the use of graphic techniques greatly enrich this branch of science. This section will be on view until June 15.
This exhibition is part of Elles il·lustres botànica, which can be visited from May 10 to September 14 at the City History Museum of Girona. It focuses on the work of women scientific botanical illustrators from the 17th century to the present, revealing the connections between art, science, and gender.
