In the year 1601, in a Barcelona in the midst of expansion, the first papier-mâché giant is documented in the procession held by the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi to celebrate the canonization of Saint Raymond of Penyafort.
Today, 425 years later, we delve into the long history of the Giants of the Pi, compiled thanks to research carried out over the past decade in the Parish Archive of Santa Maria del Pi, as well as through the many contributions of people who have collaborated in reconstructing the vicissitudes of these much-loved figures.
Four figures that have survived wars, hardships, abandonment, and prohibitions, becoming the living essence of festivities from bygone times and still moving us when they take to the streets.
